Kristall side table by Michele De Lucchi for Memphis Milano, 1981 Designed in 1981 by Michele De Lucchi for the inaugural catalogue of Memphis Milano, the Kristall side table is immediately recognisable. It uses all the codes of the Italian movement: flashy colours, simple geometric shapes and vibrant patterns. The table is composed of a round top in yellow lacquered wood with a plastic laminate body decorated with black and white patterns on a blue lacquered metal frame. Founded in 1980 by Ettore Sottsass, the Memphis group has influenced the history of design since its inaugural exhibition in 1981. Alongside Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Martine Bedin, George Sowden, etc. are shaping a radical and playful anti-design, in reaction to the good modernist taste, which will become synonymous with postmodernism. Michele De Lucchi is born in 1951 in Ferrara, Italy. He was a famous designer and architect from the 1980s to the present day, where he is still at the forefront of the scene. A key figure of Italian postmodernism, a member of Alchimia, then of the Memphis Milano group, he has also distinguished himself for his creations for other publishers, including Olivetti, Alessi, Alias, Kartell, etc. He designed several icons of the Memphis movement, including the Oceanic lamp (1981), the Flamingo (1984) and Kristall (1981) tables and the First chair (1983).
