Tortoises of most ages can eat the spineless prickly pear cactus pads for tortoises without further preparation. We prefer slicing them up a little for hatchlings and well started babies. This is one of the best possible foods for baby tortoises and really has no other equal. The glochids do not have to be removed. The tips of smaller optunia cactus pads for tortoises are tender enough for hatchlings. Young pads are a good source of nutrients. You will notice that throughout the growing season new pads are produced at greatly different rates. You can store them in your fridge for up to 6-8 weeks OR FREEZE THEM!
